Q&A: How would I explain VoIP to a child?
Question by Dak K: How would I explain VoIP to a child?
My little brother (8) is asking about voice over IP and I don’t really know how to explain it to him simplistically. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Just tell him that it sends the persons voice through the computer and through the internet instead of through the phone and phone line. I can’t think of a simpler way. If he asks how it gets to a phone just explain there’s a box that lets the call go through to other phone lines.

Your voice gets converted to digital signal and travel through the internet (IP-internet protocol) and the receiving end converts the digital signal back to sound that can be heard and understood.
Online Telephone. Use the internet to call people.
Well I take it as when you get a call, you can still be able to browse the internet. Otherwise your internet would stop or lag really bad when you would receive a phone call.
“It just goes through a computer, like Yahoo and stuff!” Start trying to explain SIP and v.323 and his eyes will glass over pretty quickly. LOL
