Most commercial providers “Vonage,Packet8,etc, use what is called an ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter). You just plug a regular telephone into the ATA and then plug the ATA into a router. Very simple to setup. You could use a provider that doesn’t supply the ATA and buy your own. They are about $ 50 (US). I have a very complex setup using a piece of software called asterisk. 6 extensions and 2 VOIP lines + land line.

you can buy special phones that u just plug into the wall… try http://www.currys.co.uk
You can use a type of router, that lets you connect your cable modem, and youre phone line to it. There fore allowing you to use VoIP with out a computer [on].
the only other way, it seems to me, is to buy a phone card and make that phone call using someone else’s computer. Voice (that’s you) and then ip (that’s internet protocol) so you need internet, which you can’t have without a computer or, perhaps a WAP phone?
I have Cox Cable and my Brother has Charter Cable and we plug out home phones straight into the modem. No computer involed. As a matter of fact, Cox told me that I did not even need HSI. They could deliver VoIP without allowing me to have internet or TV.
