On the receiving side, similar steps (usually in the reverse order) such as reception of the IP packets, decoding of the packets and digital-to-analog conversion reproduce the original voice stream.[1]

Even though IP Telephony and VoIP are terms that are used interchangeably, they are actually different; IP telephony has to do with digital telephony systems that use IP protocols for voice communication while VoIP is actually a subset of IP Telephony. VoIP is a technology used by IP telephony as a means of transporting phone calls.[2]

VoIP systems employ session control protocols to control the set-up and tear-down of calls as well as audio codecs which encode speech allowing transmission over an IP network as digital audio via an audio stream. The codec used is varied between different implementations of VoIP (and often a range of codecs are used); some implementations rely on narrowband and compressed speech, while others support high fidelity stereo codecs.

There are three types of VoIP tools that are commonly used; IP Phones,Software VoIP and Mobile and Integrated VoIP. The IP Phones are the most institutionally established but still the least obvious of the VoIP tools. The use of software VoIP has increased during the global recession as many persons, looking for ways to cut costs have turned to these tools for free or inexpensive calling or video conferencing applications.[citation needed] Software VoIP can be further broken down into three classes or subcategories; Web Calling, Voice and Video Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing. Mobile and Integrated VoIP is just another example of the adaptability of VoIP. VoIP is available on many smartphones and internet devices so even the users of portable devices that are not phones can still make calls or send SMS text messages over 3G or WIFI.[3]

You either have a “real” phone line or you have a phone system that runs over the Internet. It is difficult to tell without knowing your provider. Comcast provides VOIP, for example.

If you are not on the computer, or you are on another call, Skype will automatically forward their call to voice mail.

Internet Calls

Internet Calls offers VoIP calls to nearly any nation in the world. It’s even possible to call to land line phones in Most major European countries, and Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Argentina, Canada and the U.S. for free!

In addition, cell phone calls made to the U.S., Canada and Hong Kong are also free!

Vonage VoIP phone service?

G2 Asked: Vonage VoIP phone service?

my dad got this vonage phone service where you get this thing and hook it up to your modem with ethernet cables and it makes call through the internet. In the instructions, it says to hook up your modem first then your vonage device and then your router. i was wondering if you could hook up the vonage device in the order: modem, router, then the vonage device from an ethernet port in the router and if that would make your internet speed faster or slower or no difference when people are using the phone?

The Vonage modem is a pass-through kind of device for internet so it should not affect your internet speed at all.Like the other person said, if you connect your router to the cable modem first then you may run into problems like firewall, IP address, etc. and you have to know how to setup the internal configurations of your router.

Popularly known as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), it is a method of revising voice signals into digital IP packets and sending it through cyberspace to the final destination. A cost effective method of communication, VoIP technology is fast advancing. As it runs on server, it can be integrated with other applications, bringing in a host of other lucrative benefits.

Digital VoIP packets, sent via the Internet, require a certain amount of bandwidth in order for the transmission quality to be acceptable. Traffic partition for the VoIP class manages the aggregate traffic and the concurrent flows for the class. The partition is combined with a rate policy which defines a minimum rate for each flow. With dynamic partition technology, subpartitions are automatically created for users as they log on. For instance, a service provider can allocate different amounts of bandwidth for a particular application to various user groups. The basic concept for hierarchical partitions is that child partition minimums are limited to the parent partition. When the sum of the child partitions exceeds the minimum size of the parent partition, the child partitions are scaled proportionately.
