Can anyone argue for or against VOIP (voice over Internet protocol) versus standard phone service.?

Question by Harlan B: Can anyone argue for or against VOIP (voice over Internet protocol) versus standard phone service.?
Do I save money by routing phone calls through the Internet. Do I have to use my laptop and a headset to answer or make calls or can we pick up any phone in the house and make and answer calls? Is the technology to new to even consider now? I am confused.

The main thing that I have heard against it is that if you ISP goes down, you don’t have a phone.

How can an employer tell if you are using voip service and not a landline?

Question by freskabype: How can an employer tell if you are using voip service and not a landline?
I’m looking to apply for a work at home position and I have Voip service. The requirement is that I must have a traditional landline. How would this potential employer tell if I am using voip?

They have their ways. Probably just the prefix would show that it is a voip number. Cell Phone companies have their own prefixes and voip ought to be the same.

I use VoIP for the past 5 years and love it!! you can’t beat the price…!

before you do anything…go to DSLReports.com and do some research. If you already have a provider in mind check them out, having a good stable Internet is a key component!

I use Packet8 for over 5 years now and I’m very happy! I use a VoIP Panasonic DECT 6.0 phone…..with build-in router/firewall and 6 extensions, one of them a blue-tooth flip-phone!

I also use the MagicJack for the past year…….so far….so good!

bear in mind….if you sign up with any VoIP provider and port over your number, you will not get back your old number if you cancel the service……and most cancellation frees really stick….like 69 + dollars…!

its a law now to port your number for cell and land-line providers, but not for VoIP!! some do and some don’t….!

you have to go on-line and fill out on on-line application to get E911 which is 1.99 a month now…but with the MagicJack its free, and it work too…..I’ve tried it out several times!

Best answer:

Answer by Mike
the cheapest is MagicJackt…..if you take the promo…its like 39.95 the first year! and 19.95 thereafter!

….I got Packet8, and I’m very happy with it! but before you do anything, go on-line to there forums at see what everyone is complaining about!!!

check out this website first before you make any decisions…!

perhaps try skype first, just to see if you like it!!

don’t spend to much money up front, remember…disconnection charges……, sending back of equipment….etc….if you port your phone-number…..with VoIP they don’t port it back to you!

Q&A: Why is my voice over IP phone service not clear?

Question by David L: Why is my voice over IP phone service not clear?
I use Net Zero Voice and lately I have been getting complaints that my voice is not clear. What is the deal? Is it the service? The head set that I am using? Or? What is the cost to get a converter to use a regular phone? Will this help make it more clear?

Best answer:

Answer by Randy W
No it’s the internet connection that you have.  It may provide high speed, but it’s not a reliable and steady signal.

In order for VoIP to work well you need at least a 90Kbps upload rate. That’s a sustained rate, and at that rate you are still only getting a 80% signal quality.

To test this try making a call either really later at night like after midnight or before five am in the morning.

There are some thing that you can adjust to help but 9 times out of 10 it is the connection.

PureVoice

In today’s connected home environment with Internet file sharing, video streaming, on-line gaming, Ooma’s PureVoice Technology delivers clear audio even if substandard calling conditions exist. Ooma PureVoice Technology is composed of four key components.

Advanced Voice Compression

Ooma uses an advanced voice compression algorithm that reduces bandwidth consumption by 60% over standard VoIP technology. That leaves you with more bandwidth for all other online activities and increases the likelihood that your voice traffic will be delivered properly by your ISP.

Wire-speed QoS

Even though Ooma uses only a fraction of the bandwidth of standard VoIP technology, preserving voice quality requires that those packets arrive on time. The Ooma Telo prioritizes voice packets without slowing down the rest of your network. This way you can enjoy crystal clear calls even as you’re uploading your latest video clips.

Adaptive Redundancy

Packet loss is the enemy of VoIP – it can cause voice to sound stuttered or garbled. The Ooma Telo detects packet loss on your Internet connection and automatically sends redundant packets to boost the clarity of your phone call.

Encrypted Calls

Ooma takes your privacy seriously. We use the same encryption technology governments use to protect classified data to protect your conversations. This makes Ooma even more secure than the traditional landline.

Discover Ooma Premier

If you want to add a bundle of enhanced calling features that will get your home phone service firing on all cylinders, Ooma Telo includes a free 60-day trial to Ooma Premier, a suite of enhanced calling features. You can also add Ooma Premier to your service for .99/month or 9.99/year. If you sign up for a year, you’ll have the option of retaining your current telephone number for free (.99 value), or receiving a free HD handset (.99 value).
