Internet VoIP Phones – the Updated Technology

VoIP, better known as Voice over Internet Protocol is a protocol optimised for the transmission of voice through the internet or other packet switched networks. VoIP is often used abstractly to refer to the actual transmission of voice. It is most commonly known as IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband.

 

The companies that generally provide VoIP services are commonly referred to as providers, and protocols which are used to carry voice signals over the IP network are commonly referred to as Voice over IP or VoIP protocols. Voice over IP protocols carry telephony signals in the shape of digital audio, typically reduced in data rate using speech data compression techniques, encapsulated in a data packet stream over IP. There exist two types of PSTN to VoIP services. Direct Inward Dialing (DID) and access numbers. DID supports in connecting the caller directly to the VoIP user while access numbers need the caller to input the extension number of the VoIP user.

 

VoIP has succeeded in grabbing the attention with much facilitated tasks and by providing services that may be more difficult to implement or expensive using the more traditional PSTN. Conventional phones are connected directly to telephone company phone lines and are kept functioning with the help of back-up generators or batteries located at the telephone exchange that in the event of power failures. Generally, household VoIP hardware uses broadband modems and other equipment powered by household electricity that could be subject to interruptions in the absence of an uninterruptible power supply or generator.

 

The support of sending faxes over VoIP is still limited. The existing voice codecs are not designed in a suitable way for fax transmission. The efforts to solve this are underway by defining an alternate IP-based solution for delivering Fax-over-IP, namely the T.38 protocol. Another possible solution to overcome the drawback is to treat the fax system as a message switching system which does not need real time data transmission – such as sending a fax as an email attachment or a remote printout.

Because VoIP uses the Internet and not a landline phone, when a call is made to 911 from a VoIP connection, the operator who receives the call receives none of the caller’s pertinent information. This includes address or location of the call. Some service providers do not supply 911 at all; others have what is known as Enhanced 911 services. To use these services you may need to activate your service, as well as register your information with 911. 5 Ways Voip Can Enhance Your Business

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, a technology that uses the Internet to make phone calls, has come a long way since its debut back around 1995. The quality and robustness of the technology has greatly improved over the past decade, especially in the area of hardware based VoIP. I remember back in the first half of the noughties, working for an Internet wholesale company, when VoIP became a real buzz-word among those in the Internet Service Provider industry. This was their chance to usurp Telstra’s domination of the voice market and take a piece of that lucrative pie. The impending ‘voice revolution’ was upon us and the imminent downfall of Telstra’s network monopoly was eagerly awaited by would-be competitors. The revolution was stalled by a market that failed to appreciate the significant savings and added value that VoIP could deliver. It was seen as too complicated, the technology not robust enough, and the incumbent telco still had line rental and call termination costs by the short and curlies. Although adoption of VoIP technology by Australian businesses is still only reached around the 17% penetration mark, there are some very good reasons to take a serious look at VoIP as an alternative to giving your money to those bad old telcos.

Perhaps the most compelling reason for businesses to switch to a VoIP system is the massive savings to be had on phone bills. Tradition telephone infrastructure is expensive to maintain and is reflected in the call costs. Because VoIP technology sends voice across the Internet in the form of data, calls largely bypass the expensive PSTN copper voice telephone exchanges so that much of the termination cost is avoided. This is especially so for long distance and overseas calls.

Telephone line rental has until recently been a mandatory cost that could not be avoided unless you were happy with paying mobile rates for all your communications. When a business is looking to expand their telephone system to meet growth, often scaling up the telephone system is an expensive process. Fixed-line PBX’s, used traditionally to extend one or more telephone lines to create “virtual phone numbers” have limits to how many numbers or extensions you could have, depending on the equipment you use. The old PBX equipment was often proprietary technology, requiring expensive licensed technicians to deal with maintenance and upgrades.

With a VoIP system, such restrictions are a thing of the past. In fact, call centres have been at the forefront of VoIP integration with software to capture and interpret call stats, generally with a Customer Relationship Management package and call recording technology. Company call menus (you know, “please press 1 for sales…” etc etc) are more easily configured and reconfigured using VoIP rather than older alternative.

VoIP and Satellite Internet

VoIP has revolutionized the way telecommunication is done. Voice over Internet protocol allows voice packets to be sent over Internet bandwidth enabling cheap communication. There are many companies which offer voice over Internet services and some of the leading ones are Vonage, Skype, Yahoo and Net2Phone. Consumers can access VoIP over Internet connections like broadband and DSL. Satellite Internet is a new technology that has become very popular in recent times and VoIP providers are able to offer services to customers in remote regions using it. It will still take some time until VOIP by satellite is ultimately stabilized and customers can enjoy the full benefits.

Some of the challenges faced by service providers include packet loss, jitters and limited bandwidth. Service providers like Hughes and Skyframes which have their own satellites are teaming up with the VoIP providers to offer voice services to customers. Designing a VoIP network would require details on the bandwidth requirement for VoIP data. Satellite Internet providers are facing challenges on the bandwidth capacity that would be required to offer VoIP services via satellite channels. G.729 (b) encoding with a 40 b payload and header compression would require 10 Kbps of bandwidth. Packet loss is another challenge faced by service providers offering satellite VoIP services. Packet loss causes degradation in voice quality. The protocol used for voice traffic transmission is UDP/IP and if the data packets are corrupted they cannot be retransmitted. TCP/IP protocol allows retransmission of data packets. It is important to maintain very low bit error rates to offer high quality voice services to customers. Jitters are another technology hurdle that is faced by satellite VoIP service providers. It is used to calculate the delays in packet arrivals that happen because of network delay. If this factor is not within acceptable limits the quality of voice becomes poor and the receiver may not be able to enjoy a good conversation. Jitter buffers are used to overcome this hurdle and ensure that there is less delay in the network. Researchers and scientists are working relentlessly to overcome all hurdles that come in way of experiencing a smooth voice call through satellite Internet.

VoIP by satellite is not ideal because of some more factors. Latency factor refers to the time delay in locating the Geo-stationary satellite and the speed of light. There is a delay of 280 msec because of latency factor. Traffic congestion in the network also affects the quality of VoIP service. This can result in voice packets being dropped, delayed or reaching the receiver out of sequence. Compression technology is another parameter for delivering high quality VoIP service. There are two compression technologies that are followed as industry standards. The G.729 codec uses bandwidth of 18Kbps and RTP uses around 10 Kbps per second. If service providers are able to cope with the technological challenges of VoIP over satellite, it will not be long before remote areas of the United States can connect with the rest of the world.
