Why can I not find Voice over IP carriers in Iowa? Does Vonage have a monopoly in Iowa?
Question by doubletap_downzero: Why can I not find Voice over IP carriers in Iowa? Does Vonage have a monopoly in Iowa?
I have searched a TON of sites offering very affordable voice over IP (VOIP) service, however, all of them seem to offer service in in the ENTIRE USA except Iowa. What gives? Why won’t these companies touch Iowa? The only people offering VOIP in Iowa seems to be Qwest, MediaCom, and Vonage. Is there some monopoly they have here or what? I can get service from just about anybody in Nowheresville, Montanna or BuFu Wyoming but not in IA and its making me mad. If you can explain this unusual absence of service provision I would appreciate it. Thanks!

At first, not even Vonage was not in Iowa and a few other states. But there are a few others. (I have Vonage, and I am OK with them)
Check this comparison chart.

the cheapest is MagicJackt…..if you take the promo…its like 39.95 the first year! and 19.95 thereafter!
….I got Packet8, and I’m very happy with it! but before you do anything, go on-line to there forums at see what everyone is complaining about!!!
check out this website first before you make any decisions…!
perhaps try skype first, just to see if you like it!!
don’t spend to much money up front, remember…disconnection charges……, sending back of equipment….etc….if you port your phone-number…..with VoIP they don’t port it back to you!

Q&A: Why is my voice over IP phone service not clear?
Question by David L: Why is my voice over IP phone service not clear?
I use Net Zero Voice and lately I have been getting complaints that my voice is not clear. What is the deal? Is it the service? The head set that I am using? Or? What is the cost to get a converter to use a regular phone? Will this help make it more clear?

No it’s the internet connection that you have. It may provide high speed, but it’s not a reliable and steady signal.
In order for VoIP to work well you need at least a 90Kbps upload rate. That’s a sustained rate, and at that rate you are still only getting a 80% signal quality.
To test this try making a call either really later at night like after midnight or before five am in the morning.
There are some thing that you can adjust to help but 9 times out of 10 it is the connection.

Wireless internet on Cell phone?
Matt Lotito Asked: Wireless internet on Cell phone?
I have a 4G cell phone that allows me to use it as a wireless access point so that I can connect my laptop to it. It also allows me to use it as a wired access point by plugging the phone directly into my laptop. I work from home and the desk phone that my job gave me is VoIP phone which uses the standard cat5 cable that plugs into a router or switch to gain both access to the internet and power as well. what is the best way that I can connect my wired desk phone to use my cell phone’s internet access.

Ash Answered:
That’s a good question. If you have a wireless router, you can try switching it from Gateway mode into a Bridge mode where it will basically connect to another wireless network to sort of “extend” that network to wired devices connected to the router.
You should be able to check your user’s manual for the router model you have for specific instructions on how to do this.

Your analog signal is converted to a digital signal and routed over the internet using your cable or dsl modem.
Hm Answered:
Voice over Internet Protocol (Voice over IP, VoIP) is one of a family of internet technologies, communication protocols, and transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. Other terms frequently encountered and often used synonymously with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.
Internet telephony refers to communications services such as voice, fax, SMS, and/or voice-messaging applications that are transported via the Internet, rather than the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
The steps involved in originating a VoIP telephone call are signaling and media channel setup, digitization of the analog voice signal, encoding, packetization, and transmission as Internet Protocol (IP) packets over a packet-switched network. On the receiving side, similar steps (usually in the reverse order) such as reception of the IP packets, decoding of the packets and digital-to-analog conversion reproduce the original voice stream.[1]
Even though IP Telephony and VoIP are terms that are used interchangeably, they are actually different; IP telephony has to do with digital telephony systems that use IP protocols for voice communication while VoIP is actually a subset of IP Telephony. VoIP is a technology used by IP telephony as a means of transporting phone calls.[2]
VoIP systems employ session control protocols to control the set-up and tear-down of calls as well as audio codecs which encode speech allowing transmission over an IP network as digital audio via an audio stream. The codec used is varied between different implementations of VoIP (and often a range of codecs are used); some implementations rely on narrowband and compressed speech, while others support high fidelity stereo codecs.
There are three types of VoIP tools that are commonly used; IP Phones,Software VoIP and Mobile and Integrated VoIP. The IP Phones are the most institutionally established but still the least obvious of the VoIP tools. The use of software VoIP has increased during the global recession as many persons, looking for ways to cut costs have turned to these tools for free or inexpensive calling or video conferencing applications.[citation needed] Software VoIP can be further broken down into three classes or subcategories; Web Calling, Voice and Video Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing. Mobile and Integrated VoIP is just another example of the adaptability of VoIP. VoIP is available on many smartphones and internet devices so even the users of portable devices that are not phones can still make calls or send SMS text messages over 3G or WIFI.[3]

VOIP –> Your calls are routed over the public Internet.
You either have a “real” phone line or you have a phone system that runs over the Internet. It is difficult to tell without knowing your provider. Comcast provides VOIP, for example.
